Job Opening – Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Associate Curator (7/2009)
The Art Institute of Chicago seeks a specialist in Italian or Spanish painting and sculpture, preferably with a focus on the baroque or eighteenth century. Working together with the curator of European painting and sculpture before 1750 and other departmental curators, the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Associate Curator will be responsible for research, publication, and installation of the permanent collection in this area and in related areas, which may include European works of art before 1600. The role will include organizing, selecting and implementing in-house and loan exhibitions, particularly in this field of specialization, but in other areas as assigned. It will also include recommending acquisitions in areas of expertise and developing support for acquisitions and other projects in this field of specialization in conjunction with the Art Institute’s Committee on Medieval through Modern European Painting and Sculpture, the departmental support group (the Old Masters Society), and individuals in the community.
A successful candidate will have a PhD. in art history strongly preferred; ABD in art history required. A minimum of two years professional museum experience desirable; facility in Italian and/or Spanish, French, and some German required.
