The American Art Department seeks a creative and energetic self-starter for a limited term, grant-funded Research Assistant position. Reporting to the Curator of American Art, the Research Assistant will assist with all aspects of research and organization of the exhibition In Wonderland: The Surrealist Activities of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States, scheduled to open in Mexico in the summer of 2011 and then travel to the United States.
Some duties include: archival and biographical research on painters, graphic artists, sculptors, printmakers, and filmmakers; assisting with the identification of objects and relevant materials; assisting with the organization of the accompanying publication; aiding the exhibition curator with specific curatorial needs, including contracts, insurance, and indemnification; organizing checklists, mailings, and other correspondence.
The qualified candidate will have a master’s degree and/or Ph.D in art history, material culture, women’s studies, U.S. or Mexican art, or related field, as well as a deep knowledge of twentieth-century art, and an interest in surrealism and/or women artists. Museum experience and the ability to speak/write Spanish are preferred.
