Job Opening – Research Assistant (01/2010)

Fixed Term position: January – December 2010 (with the possibility of renewal)
Part-time, 8-16 hours per week

The Asian Art Museum seeks a motivated individual, with strong research, analytical, language, and communication skills, to assist the Director, a scholar in Chinese art history, with a variety of communication needs and special projects. Reporting to the Director’s Executive Assistant, the Research Assistant will perform a variety of support duties including:

*Preparing correspondence and other written materials in Chinese and English; assisting in making logistical arrangements for Chinese speaking visiting scholars and dignitaries

*Performing a variety of research duties such as locating articles and books in Chinese; researching biographical information; finding sources; compiling bibliographies

*Assisting with the writing and translation of articles and other materials

*Greeting and translating for scholars, dignitaries, and others as needed

*Providing other administrative support, including but not limited to, assignments requiring language skills

This one/two-day-a-week position is an excellent opportunity for a student in Asian Art History with superb Chinese language skills to supplement his/her studies with real life experience behind the scenes in a prestigious museum.

Minimum Qualifications

*BA degree required. Work towards an advanced degree in Asian Art History with emphasis on East Asian art and archaeology preferred

*Solid research and analytical skills: must be able to apply academic knowledge and techniques to solve problems and/or discover meaningful new information

*Excellent administrative skills; extremely organized and accurate

*Ability to read original Chinese research; extremely proficient in speaking, reading, and writing Mandarin and English; ability to give summary translations and more detailed word-by-word translations when necessary

*Good computer skills; knowledge of Microsoft Office and Chinese word processing programs

*Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and good judgment; extremely reliable and dependable

*Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with staff, visitors, volunteers, and representatives of other institutions

*Detail-oriented, meticulous, and conscientious in following through on assigned tasks; proactive, flexible, and resourceful

Compensation

$18.56 – 22.29/hr.*

*Please note: 1. New hires start at the beginning of the salary range. 2. The position is represented by SEIU 1021.
