BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn, a multi-disciplinary arts and media non-profit dedicated to presenting contemporary art, performing arts, and community media programs, seeks student interns to assist with varied aspects of the Contemporary Art program. BRIC’s contemporary art program presents innovative exhibitions, public programs, and special offers opportunities for visual artists. We also administer a respected arts education program in Brooklyn’s public schools.
We seek motivated, enthusiastic interns to learn about the operations of a contemporary art gallery. Interns will focus on one of three areas: exhibition coordination and curatorial projects, arts education for young people, and fundraising events and general marketing. Interns will be based at BRIC Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn Heights, the borough’s oldest contemporary art space.
Responsibilities
Interns will be involved in many aspects of gallery operations, working directly with staff. Intern projects will include:
Curatorial research and writing projects for upcoming exhibitions
Exhibition-related paperwork; compiling exhibition notebooks.
Assist in promotion of exhibitions and artist programs.
Maintain and update the online BRIC Contemporary Artist Registry.
Assist in preparation for the annual fall gala, Brooklyn Art:Work.
Providing docent tours for Brooklyn students K-12.
Assisting with the organization of artist residencies in public school classrooms.
Interns may also occasionally act as Gallery attendants and assist with other administrative tasks and errands.
We will strive to assign projects to interns that best align with individual interests and career goals.
Qualifications
Applicants should have excellent communication, organizational, and computer skills, and be able to work independently and on multiple projects simultaneously. Preference will be given to students majoring in Art History, Arts Management, or related areas. College juniors, seniors, and graduate students strongly preferred.
Interns should possess skills and experience in some of the following areas:
• Basic design including: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Excel, Microsoft, PowerPoint
• Writing, editing, and proofreading
• Internet research
• Knowledge of PC and Mac computers
• Digitizing and archiving images
• Phone and communication skills
Schedule
12-16 hours per week, for a semester-long commitment. College credit may be arranged. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 to 6.
