Under the supervision of the Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Harvard Art Museums the Curatorial Assistant will provide research, administrative, organizational and logistical support for exhibitions, acquisitions, teaching, and institutional advancement work with curators, directors, professors at Harvard and outside the University; as well as with artists, galleries and collectors as a means of strengthening and supporting the care, augmentation and use of the collection for viewing and teaching.
The Curatorial Assistant of Modern and Contemporary Art assists in the research, writing, organization of exhibitions and publications; in the care of the Collections; in the correspondence and outreach with artists, curators, professors and collectors; in the assistance and organization of symposiums and lecture series, events with Museums fellows and members and with all curatorial events organized by the Modern and Contemporary division.
The Curatorial Assistant conducts research and assists in the organization of temporary exhibitions in the museums as well as with the planning, research, writing and administrative work pertaining to the re-installation of the galleries in the renovated 32 Quincy Street building.
The Curatorial Assistant will conduct correspondence and be responsible for communication with curators and galleries pertaining to acquisitions, object research, loans and maintaining object files for the collection of Modern and Contemporary art.
The Curatorial Assistant will assist in the organization of lecture series and exhibition-related conferences at the museums including correspondence with speakers, invitation and publicity preparation, AV coordination, and other related administrative details.
The Curatorial Assistant will coordinate the appointments and travel related logistics of the Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary art pertaining to trips to visit collectors, museums, galleries, art fairs and to museums fellows events.
The Curatorial Assistant will work closely with the Modern and Contemporary division curators and curatorial assistants to support and help with all division-wide initiatives and ongoing programs and responsibilities including teaching; collections care and documentation; docent and educational program work; Collections Committee and Institutional Advancement meetings and related events.
The Curatorial Assistant will work in close collaboration with Collections Management staff and also coordinates regularly with Education, Conservation, Archives, Digital Imaging & Visual Resources, IT, and Institutional Advancement staff to advance the museum’s outreach mission.
The Curatorial Assistant will draft correspondence and field inquiries; assists in the preparation of checklists and reports; and conducts research on locations of works and photograph sources as needed along with the Curatorial Assistant for the collection.
The Curatorial Assistant will act as a source of information about the collection and its use, especially for university audiences.
The Curatorial Assistant will perform other related duties and special projects as required.

Two or more years of related experience.
BA, MA preferred with background in modern and/or contemporary art history. The ideal candidate has reading knowledge of appropriate foreign language(s). Must have strong computer skills, especially word processing and database skills; ability to learn new applications and procedures as required. The ideal candidate will has possess excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; accuracy with detail and ability to follow through on projects despite interruptions; and must be flexible, punctual, and able to function well both independently and as part of a team.
