Job Opening – Gallery Director (10/2011)

The Department of Art at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville seeks applications for the Director of the Fine Arts Center Gallery. The gallery serves university students, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as the larger community, through exhibitions and related programming.
The ideal director will engage department, campus, regional, and national audiences through exhibition and educational programming. In consultation with faculty and with departmental staff assistance, s/he will curate and implement exhibitions, determining scheduling and budget priorities. Composed of works to be requested as loans from artists, museums, collectors, commercial galleries, and exhibition venders, the exhibitions will feature contemporary—and occasionally historical—works and highlight art of international, national, and regional significance.
Job Duties: Oversee operations, including gallery budget, publications, security, publicity, and facility maintenance. Work closely with faculty in support of curriculum. Coordinate visiting artist program (in partnership with department faculty). Coordinating shipping and insurance details. Oversee all aspects of installation (with assistance of support staff). Hire and supervise gallery staff and interns. Maintain affiliated exhibition/installation spaces, including sUgAR, the University of Arkansas Student Gallery, in Bentonville. Maintain an active research record. Teaching one course per year in field of specialty.
Requirements: MFA degree in studio art or Ph.D. in art history or related field; active and significant record of exhibition organization; and publication, and/or exhibition of their own work; 3–5 years of curatorial, administrative, and operations experience in museum or gallery setting; and ability to build relationships and work effectively with faculty, staff, diverse student body, and area cultural institutions, including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
