Nestled in Central Park and anchoring New York’s famous Museum Mile, the Met seeks a specialist in early and medieval Islamic art to fill the position of Associate/Assistant Curator in the Department of Islamic Art.
Primary Responsibilities and Specific Duties:
The Associate/Assistant Curator supports the head of the department. General duties include active participation in the management, care of, and research on the collection, as well as participation in all the activities of the Department, specifically exhibitions, publications and collection management.
The Associate/Assistant Curator will be involved in the organization of special exhibitions and long-term loans including research, label writing and database maintenance. Duties will include involvement in the rotation of light-sensitive objects in the new galleries of Islamic Art; participation in departmental projects of general and scholarly publications; answering correspondence relating to the collection and assisting the public and visiting scholars; contribution to public programs (Volunteers, Education); interaction with potential sponsors; involvement in planning programs for the Friends Group and the Visiting Committee; gaining familiarity with conservation methods and procedures; fostering and maintaining good working relationships with colleagues from other institutions in the U.S. and abroad, with the scholarly community, dealers, collectors, and other individuals involved with the interests of the Museum; and performing other related duties.
Requirements and Experience:
The Museum seeks a minimum of three to five years experience in a museum or academic institution; demonstrated experience in accomplishing original research on objects of various regions and cultures of the Islamic world; strong computer skills; the ability to maintain precise and careful records; good interpersonal skills, particularly when working with donors and public; and the ability to work closely with all staff within the Department and with colleagues throughout the Museum as well as in the academic community. The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in art history of Islamic Art and good working knowledge of Arabic, French and German is preferred. Expertise in the area of early and medieval Islamic art, the ability to use sources in Arabic, general familiarity with calligraphy, metalwork, ceramics, and other objects and Islamic architecture of the period; and demonstrated research in a particular field within the larger period of early and medieval Islamic art are also necessary.
