Job Opening – Curator of Exhibitions/Coordinator (02/2012)

The incumbent will serve as the Curator of Exhibitions and will in consultation with the Chief Curator, plan, organize, coordinate, supervise, design, produce, prepare, and install exhibitions in the Library Gallery, Rotunda, and 7th Floor spaces. The Library Gallery, a space that has developed a considerable reputation for its photography exhibitions has approximately 300 running feet and 4,500 square feet of area. Other spaces where exhibitions are installed include the library Rotunda and areas on the 7th Floor. The Curator will also be responsible for: writing, preparing, and administering grant proposals related to the Gallery and its activities; writing, preparing, and editing of interpretive texts for the exhibitions and catalogs; supervising student assistants, interns, and graduate students working on exhibitions; making presentations to students, faculty, staff, and visitors, as well as preparing publicity materials for exhibitions, as appropriate; managing the Gallery’s web pages, traveling exhibitions, and the Gallery accounts; helping to define goals and objectives for the Gallery as well as writing procedures and performing assessments of Gallery activities and outcomes; and performing other duties as assigned.

Education/ Experience: Requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year college or university, as well as an M.A. or M.F.A. degree in art history, art studio, museum studies, or a related field. Must have at least three years of experience in gallery work and proven experience with writing interpretive texts and writing and receiving grants. Must have: demonstrated analytical, organizational, and interpersonal abilities; excellent verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated expertise working in a Windows-based environment; both professional initiative and flexibility, including the ability to work effectively and collegially with a large and diverse population of faculty, students, and staff; and the ability to work independently and in a team-based environment. Experience in managing web pages; knowledge of the proper handling of works of art, and historical materials; and demonstrated ability in the area of public services preferred.

Minimum starting salary $44,000. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
