Job Opening – Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art (02/2012)

The Brooklyn Museum seeks an assistant curator of Contemporary Art to participate in a fast-paced and dynamic area of growth within the Museum. The successful candidate will be deeply familiar with a broad range of contemporary art and will assist with development and implementation of both collections growth and programs.
Responsibilities: The duties of the Assistant Curator include but are not limited to the following: The assistant curator will support all departmental activities under the direction of the curator of Contemporary Art. These include: maintaining and updating departmental records; researching and documenting collection objects; fielding and responding to inquiries from the general public and scholars; assisting in the upkeep of and alterations to permanent installations; preparing gallery didactics; caring for museum objects in conjunction with museum conservators; assisting in the maintenance of an active loan schedule; assisting in the preparation of exhibitions and publications; interacting with curatorial colleagues on collaborative exhibition projects; collaborating with museum educators in the preparation of didactic materials; participating in the cultivation of department patrons; attending and assisting with the Contemporary Acquisitions Committee.
Requirements: Advanced degree in Art History or related field, Ph.D. preferred; minimum of two years experience in a curatorial department; advanced word processing skills and familiarity with databases; strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task; good interpersonal skills, creativity, openness and flexibility. Preference given to candidates with a background in photography.
Candidates should be committed to making a range of Contemporary art and practices accessible and engaging to the Brooklyn Museum’s diverse audience. Candidates should have the ability and desire to make connections between contemporary art and a range of art historical traditions and to suggest creative ways of presenting contemporary art in the context of an encyclopedic museum. Candidates should have the temperament and interpersonal skills necessary to work with a team of educators, conservators, designers, and other museum professionals. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and research skills are essential.
Starting date: Spring 2012
Work Schedule: Full time, 35 hours Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evenings and weekends as needed.
