The Art Institute of Chicago is seeking a candidate who will research and assess the collection and recommend acquisitions in the area of old master prints; propose, organize, select, and implement departmental exhibitions and rotations, as well as occasional traveling exhibitions; and supervise interns and volunteers and afternoon appointments in the study room. This individual will assist visitors, schedule appointments, enforce security procedures, and give occasional lectures on the collection to classes and museum groups, while maintaining a broad knowledge of the history of prints and drawings. This individual will research and write for museum and scholarly publications. In consultation with senior curators, this individual will work with donors and dealers to develop the collection in areas of the candidate’s specialty, and will answer research correspondence from scholars, curators, dealers, collectors, museum members, and the general public. The incumbent will travel as a courier, for research, and as a representative of the department at art fairs, symposia, etc. This position will take primary responsibility for certain ephemera collections within the permanent collection: valentines, silhouettes, botanical prints, ornament prints, and medical prints.

Mandatory Job Qualifications

A successful candidate will have an M.A. in Art History (Ph.D. preferred). Minimum of 2 years museum (or related) experience. A record of scholarly publications in the field of European old master prints and drawings. In-depth knowledge of printmaking and drawing techniques. Experience handling prints and drawings. Reading proficiency in German (preferred); at least one other European language. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Up-to-date knowledge and active participation in academic discourse in area of specialty.
