Job Opening – Associate Director (03/2012)
The Felix Gonzalez-Torres Foundation
New York, New York
The Felix Gonzalez-Torres Foundation is seeking a highly motivated, idealistic, conceptually rigorous, and extremely organized individual, for the position of full-time Associate Director.
One of the Foundation’s primary functions is a nuanced and complex strategy for communicating the specific yet open-ended parameters surrounding Gonzalez-Torres’ work, whose unique nature means that it continues to actively evolve and change over time. Consequently the Foundation acts not only as a guardian of the artist’s work but also as an active organization to promote and clarify the ideals and intentions of the artist through education, documentation and the maintenance of a dynamic archive.
Superior writing and oral communication skills are imperative as major operational tasks will include corresponding and liaising with curators, museums, public and private collections, scholars, writers, publishers and auction houses. Composing and editing documents and correspondence that conveys the conceptual underpinnings of Gonzalez-Torres’ work requires an affinity for language, deep knowledge of contemporary art and a passion for the work of Felix Gonzalez-Torres.
In addition to being an excellent communicator the position requires an ability to work well both independently and with others. An important part of the position requires assisting the Director with research and support for exhibitions and publications and delegating projects to interns or freelance workers. The Foundation is made up of a small staff and therefore requires an individual to both be a leader and a person willing to take on both complex and simple hands-on work. The individual will both carry out tasks necessary for major projects and assist with overall office administration.
Because the position has a responsibility to the complexity of maintaining this unique artist archive, knowledge of photography and digital imagery; experience with artist’s archives; knowledge of archival best practices; experience in Library Science and strong research abilities are essential. Archival duties include the maintenance of exhibition archives and publications; tracking press, both past and present; preparing contracts and images for reproduction requests; performing research to fill in gaps in the archives; processing and color correcting images in Photoshop; effectively preparing images for print; managing and updating the artist’s CV; and performing metadata entry in the database. In many cases, individual works by Gonzalez-Torres vary from exhibition to exhibition, so the tracking and maintenance of such archives are central to the nature of the work.
The ideal candidate will have at least three years of gallery, museum or foundation experience and must be detail oriented with the ability to balance many different projects at once by prioritizing and multi-tasking. In addition to knowledge of archival best practices, we are looking for an individual who is exceptionally sharp, forward thinking and engaged. Extremely strong written and verbal communication skills are imperative. The candidate must have a solid knowledge of FileMaker Pro and extensive experience with Photoshop and scanning equipment. A graduate degree in Art History and/or Library Science is preferred.
This position is designated as full-time, but an extremely strong candidate who fulfills all the above and is seeking employment 3 days a week may apply.
Salary commensurate with experience.
