The Whitney Museum seeks a Project Researcher for Painting and Sculpture to work on our Collection Documentation Initiative (CDI). CDI is a project focused on cataloguing, researching, conducting conservation assessments, and photographing works of art in the Whitney Museum’s permanent collection. The first phase of the project, scheduled to be completed in April 2012, concentrates on works on paper. The second phase of CDI, which is a two-year project beginning in May 2012, will be devoted to painting and sculpture.

The Project Researcher for Painting and Sculpture will work within the Cataloguing and Documentation office and will be responsible for conducting research on primary source materials relating directly to painting and sculpture in the Whitney Museum’s permanent collection. Working with archival records and other related sources, the Project Researcher will verify object data, such as provenance, exhibition and publication history, installation requirements, and other relevant areas. The Project Researcher will also data enter research following established metadata and content standards maintained by the Cataloguing and Documentation Office.

Requirements: M.A. in Art History, with a specialization in Modern and Contemporary American Art (20th-21st century); knowledge of artistic practices as they relate to painting and sculpture; knowledge of metadata and content standards, such as Cataloguing Cultural Objects (CCO); working knowledge of collection management database systems, TMS preferred; two to three years of relevant museum experience with an emphasis in research; excellent communication skills; works well under deadline; strong organizational skills and attention to detail; the ability to work collaboratively.
