The Art Institute of Chicago is seeking a candidate who will take primary responsibility for researching and assessing the collection and recommending acquisitions in the area of 19th- and early 20th-century French, Belgian, Dutch, German, and Scandinavian works on paper; propose, organize, select, and implement departmental exhibitions and rotations in the 19th-century galleries, as well as occasional traveling exhibitions; and, in conjunction with the Assistant Curator, supervise afternoon appointments in the study room, assisting visitors, scheduling appointments and classes, and enforcing security procedures. This individual will give occasional lectures on the collection to classes and museum groups, and–maintaining a broad knowledge of the history of prints and drawings–research and write for museum and scholarly publications. This position supervises interns and volunteers, and special projects research assistant (when appropriate). The Associate Curator will work with senior curators and donors to develop the collection in areas of the candidate’s specialty. This individual will answer research correspondence from scholars, curators, dealers, collectors, museum members, and the general public. The incumbent will travel as a courier, for research, and as a representative of the department at art fairs, symposia, etc.

Mandatory Job Qualifications
A successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Art History. Minimum of 4 years of museum (or related) experience. A record of scholarly publications in the field of 19th-Century European works on paper. Experience handling prints and drawings. In-depth knowledge of printmaking and drawing techniques. Proficiency in French and at least one other European language. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Up-to-date knowledge and active participation in academic discourse in area of specialty.
