The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art
The mission of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts is to inspire a love of art and reading in young children. The only full-scale museum of its kind in the United States, The Carle collects, preserves, presents, and celebrates picture books and picture book illustrations from around the world.
The Carle Museum is now seeking an experienced full time Registrar who will be responsible for the management of The Carle’s growing permanent collection of picture book art, currently 10,000 works, and all logistics for an active program of temporary and touring exhibitions, (approximately seven switch outs and three traveling shows annually). The Registrar, who will report to the Chief Curator and supervise the Preparator, part-time Collections staff, work study students, and interns, will be a key member of The Carle’s management team. The position will also serve as primary contact for the Collections Department in the Chief Curator’s absence to maintain smooth operations and schedules.
The successful applicant will be a detail-oriented, team player with knowledge of standard museum registration methods, well-suited to a fast-paced environment at a young Museum with a small staff. Bachelor’s degree in arts related field (i.e., art history, museum studies) with three to five years in a Registarial position, advanced degree preferred. Experience must include temporary exhibition logistics, including the organization of international and national traveling exhibitions, experience coordinating out-going loans to other Museums. Effective management skills with proven ability to motivate, lead by example, and manage direct reports, excellent organizational, computer and communications skills, and familiarity with Filemaker Pro Database are also desired. Salary is commensurate with experience.
