Established in 1961, the Museum of Wisconsin Art has transformed itself from a small community-based gallery to the principal museum in the state that focuses exclusively on the visual art history of Wisconsin.

We seek an accomplished leader whose passion for art and art history is demonstrated by a track record of creating excitement around a vision.  This individual must be an idea person with a highly creative and innovative mind, a clear vision and a unique view of the world of art as it relates to the 21st century.  A proven track record of this creative vision must be evident in order for MWA to move forward and be recognized as a premier museum in the state.

Prior experience in leading a new museum, managing significant renovations or making significant changes in exhibits and programs would be particularly desirable.  This individual must provide leadership characterized by an ability to engage major stakeholders, develop and empower staff, build credibility, carry out plans and imbue a culture of accomplishment.  We seek a leader who is an exceptional communicator and listener, both internally and externally, whose passion for the purpose is clearly evident by his or her ability to clearly and enthusiastically articulate its vision.

This person will be able to show success in cultivating and building relationships with a variety of constituents including major donors, individuals committed to the Museum’s mission, colleague cultural institutions, academic institutions, civic, corporate and political leaders.  Experience in creating and successfully leading significant outreach initiatives resulting in broader community interest, support and participation is sought.

The ideal candidate will show evidence of successful fundraising leadership that includes the acquisition of major gifts and grants from foundations, corporations, individuals and the public sector at the local, state and national level.  Particularly helpful would be a background of launching innovative, ground-breaking programs that have resulted in long term funding and/or stable revenue streams.

We seek a person who can demonstrate proven ability in developing sustainable financial and operating strategies within a nonprofit organization.  A leadership style that promotes and supports creativity and accountability, resourcefulness and professional discipline across the entire team is critical to success.  Additionally, a leader, who is charismatic, flexible, process-oriented in problem solving yet decisive and committed to action, would be highly valued.
